The Ultimate Guide to IXPE Flooring Underlayment: Specs, Density, and Performance
April 22, 2026
IXPE underlayment provides the ultimate acoustic barrier, reducing impact noise by up to 20dB. Its closed-cell structure acts as a permanent moisture shield, protecting the floor from subfloor vapor, while its high density prevents the fragile click-lock joints from cracking under pressure
For flooring applications (specifically SPC, LVT, and Laminate), IXPE is engineered to balance compressive strength and acoustic dampening.
Usually ranges from 1.0mm to 2.0mm.
- 1.0mm/1.5mm: Most common for SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) flooring.
- 2.0mm: Preferred for high-end laminate or engineered wood.
Typically 33kg/m³ to 100kg/m³.
- 33kg/m³ - 45kg/m³: Standard residential use; provides a softer walking feel.
- 67kg/m³ - 100kg/m³: High-density / Commercial grade; offers superior protection for the flooring click-lock system under heavy loads.
Traditionally Black, Blue, or Grey.
Standard rolls at 1.0m or 1.1m to match flooring plank widths.
IXPE flooring underlayment is a high-demand export commodity, particularly in regions with strict building codes regarding noise insulation (IIC/STC ratings):
- North America: The largest market (USA and Canada), driven by the massive popularity of SPC click-flooring.
- Europe: High demand in Germany, UK, and France due to stringent environmental and acoustic regulations (Impact Sound Reduction).
- Southeast Asia: Emerging markets like Vietnam and Thailand, which serve as global manufacturing hubs for flooring exports.
- Oceania: Australia and New Zealand, where moisture resistance and mold prevention are key priorities for residential builds.
IXPE is used in two primary ways:
- Pre-attached Underlayment (Factory Integration)
The most common application for SPC and LVT. The IXPE foam is permanently laminated to the back of the flooring plank during the manufacturing process.
- Method: A specialized hot-melt adhesive or thermal bonding machine attaches the foam to the core board.
- Benefit: Reduces labor costs for the end-user and ensures 100% coverage.
- Loose-lay Installation (Roll Form)
The IXPE is sold in rolls and laid out across the subfloor before the flooring is installed on top.
- Clean the subfloor thoroughly.
- Roll out the IXPE, ensuring edges meet but do not overlap (to prevent unevenness).
- Seal seams with moisture-proof aluminum tape.
- Install the "floating" floor planks directly on top.
